Giulia was the mistress of pope Alexander VI; she was sixteen years old when their affair began and he was a man in his sixties. She was living with Alexander’s daughter Lucrezia who was her close friend. Giulia bore Alexander a daughter named Laura; Giulia also influenced the Pope into giving her brother Alessandro the cardinalate. 

Alexander’s relationship with Giulia was widely known among the gossips of the time, and Giulia was referred to as “the Pope’s whore” or sarcastically as “the bride of Christ”.
